Cuando + subjunctive/future tense

Hi, I also have a similar doubt. We are using sere in first example ( When I am older, I will be a doctor) i.e simple future but we are using vayan (subjunctive) in this statement:  Tendrán mucho frío cuando vayan a Escocia el próximo diciembre.

Why are we using vayan instead of iran (simple future) here like in first example?

Please help thank you!

Hola Punya

In the sentence "Tendrán mucho frío cuando vayan a Escocia el próximo diciembre", the action of going to Scotland is considered uncertain or hypothetical because it depends on future plans or decisions.

When "cuando" introduces an event that is anticipated in the future and is not yet realized, Spanish grammar dictates the use of the subjunctive to denote this uncertainty or anticipation.

However, for events that are considered certain to happen, we need to use the simple future instead.

Un saludo

Silvia
