Let me briefly tell you the history of the Dominican Republic. It turns out that its first inhabitants were the Tainos, back in 600 BC, who were an indigenous tribe. With the arrival of the Spanish to the island in 1492, it became the first European settlement in the Americas and was baptised Santo Domingo, which is the present capital of the country. After having gone through three centuries of Spanish colonization, the Dominican Republic became independent in 1821. In 1930, a cruel dictator ruled the country until he was assassinated in an ambush in 1961. After several internal conflicts, including a civil war in the country, the Dominican Republic became a democracy and today it is the ninth most important economy in Latin America.
