How does language acquisition occur? According to Chomsky, all children are born with an innate capacity for speech, learning and assimilating communicative and linguistic structures since they are born. With this idea, it follows that language learning during childhood happens due to the capacity that we human beings have to recognize and assimilate the basic structure of language. Furthermore, Chomsky developed the concept of universal grammar, and affirmed that human language is the product of deciphering a program determined by our genes. This statement is very interesting, although it clashes with other theories that base learning on the environment. Finally, it is also known that during childhood there exists a greater brain plasticity to learn languages, and that we are like sponges that easily absorb many concepts.
