La Gritería

Every year on December 8, Nicaragua celebrates the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary with La Gritería. On this day Nicaraguans construct altars to Mary which are visited by friends, families and neighbours. Children particularly enjoy shouting "¿Quién causa tanta alegría?" (who causes so much joy?) and receive small, usually edible gifts referred to as either "un brindis" or "una gorra". This video shows how the Nicaraguan city of León celebrates this special feast day.
