French Grammar Checkers

Automated tools ranked from bad to worst

A grammar checker is a program, whether on- or off-line, that can correct spelling and some grammar errors in any given text. Since they're limited in their ability to understand things like context, grammar checkers can never replace a human corrector, but if all you need is a quick, automated check of text you've written, a French grammar checker can correct some obvious mistakes and signal potential errors.

But just how good - or bad - are online French grammar checkers? To give you an idea of how they perform, I took a famous French text* and added 24 mistakes of varying difficulty to it, then ran this error-riddled French through the top four checkers. As you'll see, they all missed many of the mistakes, and one even made two errors of its own.

Tel est mon but, mon seul but ! Voilà pourquoi Je convie tous les Français, ou qu'ils se trouvent, à s'unir à moi dan l'action, dans le sacrifice et dans l'esperance. Nos patrie est en péril de mort. Luttons tous pour le sauver ! Viva la France !

Online French grammar checkers

BonPatron found 15 of the 24 mistakes. This grammar checker is the most extensive: on the site, you can hover over the highlighted text to read the explanation, as well as scroll down to read a detailed summary of all errors.

LanguageTool found only 11 mistakes, which can be clicked on the site to read the brief explanation.

Reverso found 18 errors, which can be hovered over for brief explanations. The checker automatically fixed most of the errors (blue) and suggested fixes for 2 (green). However, two of Reverso's corrections were wrong.

Software French grammar checkers

Some software comes with built-in or add-on grammar checkers, but these are nothing to write home about either.

Microsoft Word's built-in spelling and grammar checker only found 3 legitimate errors.

Just for fun, we also ran a classic English catchphrase through MS Word - epic fail!

Firefox's Grammar Checker add-on and OpenOffice's LanguageTool extension both use LanguageTool's libraries (see above).

The best grammar checker?

I wanted to rank these from best to worst, but given how poorly they all performed, the best I can do is bad to worst:

  1. BonPatron
  2. Reverso
  3. LanguageTool
  4. Microsoft Word

(While it's true that Reverso found more errors than BonPatron, it introduced two new ones, which is unforgivable.)

The bottom line

grammar-check-poster-wikipedia

A grammar checker is a useful tool if your French is less than perfect, but it can only do so much. The best grammar correctors are human, so when grammar matters, skip the automated stuff. You can ask questions on Kwiziq's Q and A forum, or you can post to a site like Lang-8, where native speakers are happy to offer corrections in exchange for you providing corrections to a text written in your native language.

Even better, why not improve your French to the point where you aren't making mistakes? Kwiziq's adaptable testing system can help - just sign up for a free account and take our placement test to receive a customized Studyplan with lessons based on what you know, what you're not sure about, and what you haven't learned yet. Each time you take a kwiz, the system tracks your progress and fruther refines your Studyplan to help you advance all the way from A1 to C1 (CEFR proficiency levels).
